Increasingly more customers want same-day-delivery

Not too long ago, customers thought it was normal for them to wait a few days for their online order to arrive. However, customs are changing and they are changing quickly. Increasingly more online stores are deciding to guarantee next-day delivery. If you order before a certain time, you will receive your product the next business day. As a result, more customers of online stores began to expect their orders to arrive that quickly. The next step has already been taken and an increasing amount of customers want to be able to count on same-day delivery. This development has accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rising demand for same-day delivery

With same-day delivery, the customer orders before a certain time to have the order delivered the same day. Several large online stores have started to offer this option, including Bol.com, which means that smaller online stores are also getting started with this. They are forced to do this if they want to keep up with their competitors, especially since the demand for same-day delivery is increasing. Last year, in 2021, the demand for same-day delivery increased by no less than 69 percent.

What are the customer’s expectations?

It is important for webshop owners to know exactly what the expectations of the consumer are. After all, it is important to meet these expectations as best as possible. According to research, nearly 1 in 5 consumers feel the need for same-day delivery. More than half of consumers, 58 percent, expect same-day delivery if the order is placed before noon. Incidentally, we do not only see expectations and trends when it comes to the delivery speed of orders. We also see that the demand for green delivery options is increasing.

Can the delivery services handle this demand?

The online store owner is of course not the only party that plays a role in making same-day delivery possible. The delivery service must also be able to handle it. PostNL is the largest parcel service in the Netherlands. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this service delivered no fewer than 384 million packages. The average delivery time was 1,3 days, with 83 percent of all packages being delivered within 24 hours.

In December, this percentage dropped to 81 percent due to the enormous increase in packages. It is important for webshop owners to choose a parcel service that is also trying to achieve same-day delivery. At the moment, not all delivery services can meet this requirement. Nevertheless, because it is a lasting trend, more delivery services are actively working on improving their service to meet this demand.
